Best Family & Maternity Photo Locations in Stevens Point and Plover

If you’re looking for the best photo locations in the Stevens Point and Plover area, you’re in the right place! One of the first things my clients ask is, “Where should we take our photos?” While I always send a location guide to help narrow down the options, these five locations are by far the most requested.

These spots are especially popular for family photos and maternity sessions, but they also make beautiful backdrops for couples, engagement sessions, and children’s milestone photos. I’ve lived in Central Wisconsin for about three years, and I’m still discovering new hidden gems every season. However, these locations continue to stand out because they offer beautiful scenery, easy parking, and plenty of opportunities to create timeless images.

Whether you’re hoping for colorful fall leaves, peaceful lake views, open meadows, or towering pine trees, there’s a location that fits your vision.

1. Schmeeckle Reserve Visitors Center | The Most Popular Photo Location in Stevens Point

If I had to pick the location my clients request most often, it would definitely be the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitors Center.

This location is especially popular during the fall, and for good reason. The changing leaves create a beautiful backdrop for family and maternity photos. Every year, I host my fall mini sessions here because it offers so much variety without requiring a long walk.

Within just a few minutes, we can capture photos in several different settings. From wooded trails to open spaces, every part of the reserve offers something unique. As a result, your gallery will have plenty of variety while keeping the session relaxed and efficient.

This location also works beautifully for couples, engagement sessions, and children’s milestone photos, making it one of the most versatile spots in the Stevens Point area.

My favorite time to photograph here is during golden hour. The warm evening light filters through the trees and creates the soft, glowing look that so many families love.

2. Lake Joanis | A Peaceful Lake Setting with Beautiful Light

Located within Schmeeckle Reserve, Lake Joanis deserves its own spot on this list.

The walking paths around the lake provide gorgeous light as the sun shines through the trees. Meanwhile, the lake itself creates a peaceful backdrop that adds even more variety to your gallery.

One of my favorite features is the charming little fishing pier. It makes a perfect spot for family photos, maternity portraits, engagement sessions, or those quiet moments that often become favorite images.

Just like the main reserve, golden hour is the best time to schedule your session here. The warm light across the water creates a timeless, natural look.

3. Iverson Park | A Relaxed Location for Family Photos

Iverson Park is a wonderful option for families looking for a relaxed and easy photo session.

The park offers beautiful natural scenery while keeping everything easily accessible. It’s a great choice if you want a simple outdoor setting without a long walk between photo spots.

One of my favorite things about Iverson Park is that there’s a playground nearby. It’s the perfect reward for little ones after family photos, which can make picture day even more enjoyable for everyone.

Like many of my favorite locations, I recommend scheduling your session during golden hour for the softest, most flattering light.

4. Standing Rocks | Beautiful Open Meadows for Families and Milestone Session

If you love wide-open scenery, Standing Rocks is a fantastic choice.

The open meadow creates a beautiful backdrop for family photos and gives everyone plenty of room to move around naturally. It’s also one of my favorite locations for larger family groups because the open space photographs so well.

Standing Rocks is also a wonderful location for children’s milestone sessions. The grassy fields create a simple, timeless setting that keeps the focus right where it belongs—on your little one.

Golden hour is definitely the best time to visit. The warm sunset light across the meadow creates a soft, dreamy look that never goes out of style.

5. Little Plover River | Beautiful Pines and Great Midday Light

Little Plover River is one of my favorite hidden gems.

While there is a bit of a walk to reach my favorite spot, it’s absolutely worth it. The tall pine trees create a peaceful setting that feels completely different from the other locations on this list.

One thing I especially love about this location is the tree coverage. Because the shade helps soften the light, it’s one of the few places I recommend for sessions earlier in the day. If evening doesn’t work for your schedule, this location still provides beautiful lighting.

The pine trees create a timeless backdrop for family photos, maternity sessions, couples, and milestone sessions throughout the year.
